There are 206 bones in a normal adult human body. However, an individual is born with 300 bones. An infant comprises of regular bone and some bony structure made up of material called cartilage. At the very beginning, the cartilages are basically soft and tender and enough flexible. But as long as they grow, these cartilages become harder and turn into regular bone. The largest bone in the body is the femur, a leg bone, running from the hip to the top of patella. The smallest bone in the body is the stirrup within the eardrum. Bones are made up of various layers such as periosteum, compact bone, cancellous and bone marrow. Bones are responsible for making blood cells from bone marrow, bones develop the fundamental structure of the body, bones protect the internal organs.
