When Was Chessington Hall Built?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Chessington Hall dates back to 1520. It is a country house in Chessington, a village located in the English county of Surrey. In the world of literature, Chessington Hall was the cottage of Samuel Crisp (1707 to 1783). Crisp was a close friend of author Fanny Burney. Crisp came to Chessington Hall in 1754, because it provided him the peace and serenity he needed to recover from the setback he suffered after the failure of his play Virginia.

He was buried in the churchyard at Chessington following his death on April 24, 1783 and was commemorated in the church by a memorial. Chessington Hall was demolished in 1832. It was then replaced by a new building. In the second half of the 19th century, the Chancellor family lived in Chessington Hall (from 1850 to 1910) and their estate papers can be found in the Surrey History Centre at Woking. An order for the purchase of the house and estate was passed by the Kingston Borough Council in 1946, and Chessington Hall was demolished again in 1965.
