    The only song I can think of whose lyrics vaguely matches the lyrics that you wrote is "Life for Rent" by DIDO. This song is from DIDO's album "Life for Rent" which was released in 2003-2004. The lyrics for this song were written by DIDO herself and soon after its release, this album became the fastest selling album ever in the history of music in UK.

    The album remained on top of the selling charts not just in UK but in Ireland, Denmark, France, Switzerland and many other countries. Dido is not just a singer but a great songwriter. DIDO is an Award winning singer and has been nominated for a Grammy twice. The song "Life for rent" was preceded by another hit single from DIDO called "White Flag" which she wrote herself too.
