Why Is Friends Such A Popular TV Show?

Friends, the American television sitcom, based in New York City but actually filmed in LA is one of the most popular sitcoms in the world. But the question is why?

First, it is the chemistry between the cast members, they managed to write and cast, a very different type of person/character to each role, making it easier for us all to identify with one of the characters. A common question during Friends's original run was 'Which one are you?'

The second is that the programme seems to hit all types of comedy from the highly cerebral to the slapstick. It is also not afraid to mix it up. The character of Ross is a Ph.D, and he is often given the slapstick, whereas Joey who with Phoebe is not the sharpest tool in the shed is often given the most intellectually challenged scenarios.
The comedy is not particularly clever, although the combination of types of comedy scores hit after hit.
