What Happens To Hans Andersen's "Little Match Girl"?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

A little girl spends a whole cold winter's day trying to sell matches on the streets. No one buys any, and she is afraid to go home to her father, who will beat her for not bringing back any money. Besides, their home is as cold as the street. So she sits down in a corner and lights a match to keep herself warm. While it flares, she has a clear vision of a warm iron stove. Cheered by this, she lights another match and sees an inviting feast before the match burns out. The third match shows her a Christmas tree which becomes a sky full of stars. One star is falling – that means someone is dying. The girl thinks sadly of her late, beloved grandmother. Lighting a fourth match, she sees her grandmother, smiling in welcome. Finally she lights all her matches, and feels herself carried away in her grandmother's arms. In the morning the little match girl is found dead in the street.
