Harleylou,
Stage 1 labor starts with uterine contractions and ends when the cervix is fully dilated. This averages 6-12 hours. Bitches are usually restless, nervous, pant, shiver, pace, sometimes vomit, often won't eat, and will find a spot to nest. Stage 2 starts with entry of the fetus into the birth canal. The first puppy should arrive in 4 hours or less once stage 2 starts, and the time between pups is 20-60 minutes although 2-3 hours can be normal. In Stage 3 they pass the placenta.
Dystocia (difficult or unable to birth) is due to small or deformed birth canal, fetal oversize (puppies too big), or a uterine weakness. Brachycephalic (smushed faces like pugs), miniature and small breed are more prone to dystocia.
It sounds like you are 24 hours into stage 1 labor--I recommend taking her in to see a veterinarian to determine if she needs a C-section.

If your dog is having trouble you should call your vet because a puppy could be stuck in the birthing canal. This could be fatal to all of the puppies and mother.
