What Has Been Said About James Calhoun?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

James Calhoun was born on February 12, 1811 in South Carolina. He parents died when he was only 18 years of age. He gained his popularity as Mayor of Atlanta, Georgia during the civil war.

He was a law graduate and has even passed the bar. He was elected to the General Assembly of Georgia in the year 1837. He is known for his surrender of the Atlanta city on September 2, 1864 at the hands of William T. Sherman. That is considered as a cowardly act by many. However, it must be understood that he did not have a chance against them. His little volunteer Militia for the defense of Atlanta could do nothing against the Confederate Army of Tennessee and he had to surrender and then leave the city.
