It is a beautiful film. The script of the movie is very good and sensibly written. It has been filmed evenly better. The cast does not have many mega names except for Edward Norton a reasonably well know performer. Paul Giamatti is also there to be noticed as well. This is very right to have some how a medium level cast other wise big names may have over shadowed the story of the movie.
The story moves around a great magician Eisenheim who was one of the highest names in the magic world. His childhood love was taken away from him due to his poor background and then he went on to enrich his magic skills.
Fifteen years later he staged a show at Vienna and was very well appreciated and acknowledged by the audience. Soon the prince along with his fiancée was there to see his show. There he met his lost love Sophie as the fiancée of the prince. She assured him that she still wants to be with him. Then he plans the greatest illusion and achieves his love that no body could understand except the inspector who was after him. But he was left with nothing to arrest him.

THE ILLUSIONIST was one of the classiest movies of the past year or so. Among its strengths are its production design (set and costumes) and its cinematography, which created an atmosphere of mystery and romance. It's a period movie, and it's photographed in a very evocative way, with dim lighting and long takes. I believe the movie was filmed in Hungary, which stands in for 19th century Vienna, and it conveys a sense of the exotic.
The script balances cleverness (a couple of surprising plot developments) with heart (the love story between the Edward Norton character and the Jessica Biel character). It unfolds in an interesting way, with a bit of a teaser at the beginning and then extended flashbacks.
The real reason the movie works, in my opinion, are the performances of Edward Norton and Paul Giamatti. They have a cat-and-mouse relationship that unfolds beautifully. These guys are two of the smartest actors working in America today, and they were superb. And though I'm normally not a huge fan of Jessica Biel, but I thought she was credible as the female lead. (Plus - hubba hubba...)
The people behind us when we saw THE ILLUSIONIST had also seen THE PRESTIGE, and they said that there was no comparison; they were deeply disappointed by THE PRESTIGE (another story of magicians in the 19th century). I still want to see THE PRESTIGE (Christopher Nolan and Christian Bale together again? How could I not?), but it will have to be SOME MOVIE to match THE ILLUSIONIST.
