The first president of International Business Machines (IBM) was Thomas J. Watson Sr. (1874-1956). He was born in Campbell, New York and as a young man sold sewing machines and musical instruments; his formal education was a course from the Elmira School of Commerce.
He later joined the National Cash Register Company as a salesman where his sales technique perceived to be dubious even earned him a suspended one year sentence. He later became the President of the Computing Tabulating and Recording Company in 1914 which he later named as International Business Machines (IBM) in 1924. The machines developed primarily were punched card tabulating machines.
His man management skills were excellent and soon IBM became one of the topmost companies in its field; Watson was well known for the paternalistic care he took of his employees regarding salary and fringe benefits. International relations were one of his special interests and he often conferred with President Roosevelt on various issues.
