 Parotid Gland Removal In Doberman. How Long Is Surgery And What Is Prognosis For My Dog After Surgery? |
| My 10 year old doberman has swelling in left parotid gland. She had it drained end of February and 2 months later it is swelling again (swelling never went down after draining -- vet said it capsulated). Faced with possible removal of parotid gland. How long is surgery and what is prognosis for my dog after surgery? She also has muscle myosistis. |

Is your dog having problems like weight loss, loss of appetite, difficulty in swallowing and foul breathing smell? These symptoms lead to tumors. Normally Parotid glands carry the tendency of developing tumors which is fatal to dog’s health. It’s better to get biopsy test before any surgery to know the exact problem (presence or absence of tumor). If a tumor is found then its better to remove it through surgery but if it is already spread then its better to give it other treatment that is chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Well yes, surgical removal of this gland has after effects like inability of eye blink, drooling and drooping of face because of connectivity of this gland with various nerves and blood vessels.

My dog had an x-ray in January and biopsy in February. Vet said it was not a tumor, but a blood clot. At that time, he put in a drain and some of the swelling went down but not all because he said that it had capsulated. My dog has a great appetitie and breath smells normal (like dog breath) - nothing foul. The swelling is coming back and Vet said that the only thing to do now is remove the parotid gland. He did all kinds of testing on the liquid that was removed (blood and clear) and tests came back negative to cancer and other diseases. Vet said there was no "mass" just swelling with liquid.
