What Does Vaccine Mean ?

Answer Question

3 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

A vaccine is a small amount of infectious agent, usually a virus, that when introduced to the body is sufficient to cause the immune system to produce antibodies without the virus being in sufficient quantity to cause the disease. The body is therefore prepared if confronted by the virus in an epidemic situation, the body has a head-start and can eliminate the virus before the virus causes disease. Nowadays it is common for vaccines to be made from 'killed' rather than 'live' virus to eliminate any chance the vaccine might cause the disease.

The name comes from vacca, the Latin word for cow, since the first vaccine was made from cowpox, to protect against smallpox.

A vaccine is a biological preparation that improves immunity to a particular disease. Vaccine is similar to immunization.
