    January basically is the first month of the year in the Julian and Gregorian calendars. It is said to be one of the seven months having a total length of 31 days. The month of January starts of with the sun in the sign of Capricorn and eventually ends in the sign of Aquarius. The month of January gets its name from Janus, who is the god of doorway, January is said to be the door to the year. Customarily, the initial Roman calendar use to comprise of 10 months, having a total of 304 days, winter being measured as a monthless phase.

    Even though March was initially the primary month of the ancient Roman calendar, but was later shifted to January 1st and the reason for this switch being to permit the new consuls to finish the elections and ceremonies on turning consuls.
