What Is The Background History Of Las Vegas?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The largest city in the Silver State, Las Vegas is situated in the sweltering heat of the Mojave Desert in southern Nevada. On the face of it, Las Vegas is an unlikely spot to possess a magnetic attraction.

Unquestionably, Las Vegas does exert a powerful force. An estimated 60,000 people every month move to live in the area. Thirty six million of Americans visit the place each year.

The attraction of Vegas can be traced back to the 1930s when gambling was legalized. Until then Las Vegas had been little more than a stopover on the Union Pacific railroad between Los Angeles and Salt Lake City. In the 70 odd years since, Las Vegas has grown phenomenally into the vast pleasure-dome it is today.

Its dedication to entertainment and the pursuit of pleasure made it a natural haunt of the Sinatra/Martin Rat Pack. And today that 24 hour party atmosphere has not diminished, although there are some attempts to widen the appeal of Las Vegas and create more family-friendly packages.
