Sean Penn won the category for 'Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role' in the 76th Academy Awards, held in 2004. This was for the role of Jimmy Markum in Mystic River.

Fellow nominees in the category included Johnny Depp in 'Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl', Ben Kingsley in 'House of Sand and Fog', Jude Law in 'Cold Mountain' and Bill Murray in 'Lost in Translation'.

In accepting the award, Penn mentioned that his two children had told him it would be presumptious to write a speech. He paid tribute to great actors such as Nicholas Cage and Jack Nicholson who hadn't been nominated for the award. He also thanked his family.

'Mystic River' is an adapted novel that is directed by Clint Eastwood. It follows three schoolfriends that have been reunited following the tragic death of one of their daughters. Tim Robbins was also nominated for an Oscar for the film.
