What Is The Danger In Body Suspension?

My daughter wants to do this and I am mortified of even the thought. They put large hooks into your skin and suspend you. Chris Angel has done this. What is the danger

Apart from the fact that many find this experience moving in a pleasurable way. It's all a matter of physics and proper procedure. Certain areas of the skin are tougher than others. If they are pierced properly, there will be NO hooks ripped out of your body.

I recently saw this on TV, and for the life of me, I just can't understand why anyone would want to do it!  I didn't see it, but I can imagine that the skin could tear causing serious wounds.  There's always the chance of infection.  There are going to be scars.  Does your daughter want to be disfigured?

I have heard that people do such things to be different or to define their own identities.  I doubt if they consider the long-term consequences.  Did your daughter tell you why she wants to do this?  If she's of legal age, there's not much you can do besides try to talk her out of it.  If not, please don't let her try it.  There are quite a few web sites dealing with this "activity".   Google "body suspension", and do some research.  I wish you all the luck in the world.

Suspension was practiced by the Souix Indians as a ritual for boys wanting to prove their worthiness and bravery. After the ceremony the "braves" transcended from boyhood into manhood. Research "Sun Dance Ceremonies" for the whole story. With competent people guiding the insertion of the suspension hardware, and good aftercare of the wounds the only permanent consequences or damage should be a few small scars, and a personal knowledge of the amount of pain one can transcend or otherwise deal with.
