There really is not a lot of evidence that some colonists wanted to deal with the Indians(Native Americans) fairly. In the beginning the Native Indians fed the colonists, taught them about the land, the growth of crops and basically taught them how to survive in this land.
From the beginning those colonists who appeared to want to deal with the Indians, too often had ulterior motives. Colonists used the Indians to get what they needed to survive. John Smith, John Rolph were among those who began with good intentions to deal fairly with the Indians. In time even they appeared to deal with the Indians for their own benefit.
Once the colonists began making metal weapons the Indians thought they would be attacked. The building a fort was the beginning of the end for any fair dealings between the Indians and the colonists.
Pochohontas, daughter of the chief was the most friendly toward the Colonists from the beginning, but history shows her kindness was not mutual. The Indians were shown the colonists were focused on dealing with them for their own benefit. The Indians felt used and at times were abused. They fought back at times, as the colonists and others began to force them from the lands, where they had always made their homes.
