Art Deco was a 20th Century movement which drew its name from its major exhibition, the Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels Modernes. The movement began in the decorative arts, but its influence can be seen in architecture, fashion and design.
Art Deco can be seen as a direct response to the drudgery of the First World War. Its opulent style seemed to herald a new era of industrialisation and wealth, making extensive use of new materials such as stainless steel and lacquer. The movement was full of motifs and recurring themes, the most widely known being the sunburst which can still be seen on glass doors around the world, but which at the time adorned radios, radiator grilles and windows everywhere.
Architecture was perhaps the field most heavily influenced by Art Deco, with its notable figures including Lutyens, Sunlight, Walker and Flight Fletcher. However it also permeated the visual arts, counting Jensen, Kiselewski, Lalique and Ruhlmann as its own.
