Canaan was the name of an ancient region situated in West Asia and comprising of modern day Israel, the Gaza and West Bank as well as the coastal areas and parts of Lebanon and Syria; the region and its habitants known as Canaanites are mentioned in several ancient texts and scriptures like the Hebrew Bible as well as Mesopotamian and Egyptian texts with the earliest reference being in an 18th century BC source.

The Canaanites are supposed to have originated from the region comprising present day Lebanon especially the coastal city of Sidon with their language considered to be a part of the Semitic languages; Canaan has been referred to in the Bible as being the grandson of Moses and the son of Ham.

The region was well known for a purple dye which was referred to according to the place where it was made known in later times as Tyrian purple; the dye was a principal export commodity of the Phoenicians who originated from Phoenicia situated in the northern part of the Canaan region, and who later spread their civilization as far as Carthage (modern day Tunisia) and Malta. Throughout history the region was conquered by several powers like Egypt, Babylonia and Persia.
