False, I believe, they tried to secede from Nigeria from 1967-1970. They declared themselves independent in 1967 but General Yakubu Gowon, the leader of the federal government, refused to recognize Biafra's secession and after a battle in which Biafra became landlocked and no supplies could get into their small state they ceased to be an independent state in early 1970.
