Is Gluten-free Food Expensive?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Like all specially products--such as organic items--gluten-free food does tend to be more expensive than most products containing gluten. The reason for this is partly due to the concept off supply and demand. Gluten-free products cater to a smaller consumer base, resulting in an increase to the price per unit.

For example, in the United Kingdom a small package (approximately 150g to 200g) of biscuits can range in price from £1.99  to £2.49.  A 500g box of organic porridge flakes will usually cost approximately £2.95 to £3.50 while 300g of crackers are sold for approximately £4.00. Pastas also tend to be quite expensive, with a 500g bag of macaroni usually costing between £3.50 and £4.00.

Gluten-free products are also more expensive in the United States. You may likely pay over $7.00 for a box of cereal, or approximately $8.00 for pancake mix.
