The utility room disappeared from new build homes in the United Kingdom in the early part of the 20th century, although it was known then as the scullery. This was a room just off the kitchen where dirtier tasks, such as washing clothes, could be done away from food preparation. In the late 1970's and early 1980's fitted kitchens became popular and the idea of a separate room came back in to stop the new kitchens getting dirty. They came back as 'utility rooms', which was the term used in the USA. They are used to house appliances such as washing machines, tumble driers and perhaps freezers, and also to store household cleaning tools and products.
