Moving a piano is a difficult task more so if one is moving a grand piano; grand pianos can weigh up to 1500 pounds. Not only is it way too heavy but is quite unstable to heave around and involves complicated maneuvers and moving equipment especially if one intends to move it up the stairs; in short a job for the pros. It would be worth every penny; amateurs who have tried it have been known to have damaged the piano irreparably or worse to have hurt themselves pretty badly.

The best thing would be to contact a piano store who can guide you to people who have experience in this line and who are better qualified than the usual packers and movers to do the job. Generally pianos are not moved using the routine packing and moving procedure. Most of the companies that claim expertise in this line use what is known as a piano skid in combination with a dolly. Often a crane is used to hoist the piano if the moving involves a number of stairs and if there is a window large enough for the purpose.

The procedure involves removal of the legs and lyres as these are the most frequently damaged things while moving a piano. A grand piano is best moved by putting it on its side, packing it in blankets and then strapping it securely, along with pads to protect the finish, to the skid before putting it on top of a dolly. Moving home is an art more so when pieces like a piano are involved so make sure that your classy furniture items are in the best hands.
