Blaine is a masculine name and more commonly, a surname which is said to be of Gaelic, Old English origin meaning svelte, thin or lean. It is also thought to mean 'the source of a river'. Still others believe it comes from a surname which means "servant of Blaan" (a Scottish saint).

There are a number of places named Blaine in the United States such as Blaine, Maine; Blaine, Minnesota; Blaine Township, Michigan; Blaine, Texas; Blaine, Ohio; and Blaine, Washington. There is also a fictional town called Blaine in Missouri which is the backdrop for the movie Waiting for Guffman.

Several people also share the name Blaine. Some examples are James G. Blaine (1830-1893), a prominent United States House of Representatives Speaker; John J. Blaine (1875-1934), a governor and Senator of Wisconsin, United States; and the famous American David Blaine (1973 - present), who is an illusionist and stunt performer. The name is also a popular one for fictional characters like Blaine from Pokémon and Blaine the Mono, from the fictional works The Wastelands and Wizard and Glass by Stephen King.
