I Have A Bullmastiff. She Has Been Bitten By Red Ants On Wednesday. Bits Have Now Gone Down But She Is Still Being Sick, Has An Upset Stomach And Has Not Eaten For Two Days. Can Anyone Help?

My dog has been bitten two days ago by a nest of red ants in the garden. She seems to have had a reaction. She is being sick still even though this only seems to be bile now. She has not eaten for two days and has an upset stomach. Can dogs have an allergic reaction to red ant bites and if so is there anything that I can treat her with?

Regardless of the cause your dog needs to be examined by a veterinarian if she has not been able to keep anything down for 2 days.  If your dog is vomiting oral medications will not be effective.  An allergic reaction can be treated with injectable Benadryl and if needed steroids.  Also anti-emetics (anti-vomiting) agents will be administered via injection.  If your dog is dehydrated fluid therapy--either subcutaneous (under the skin) or intravenously-- will be administered.

Well you have not stated how many ants bit her but it does not matter and I will try my best to help you solve this problem as I myself am a doglover. Firstly it sometimes happens that these red ants if they have been around something poisonous and something that they made contact with that had some disease, these ants can then transfer it to other animals. It is still not certain if humans can get it but there are some cases where animals have become sick due to other animals. I would recommend that you wait for a few days and see if the problem goes away. Try giving your dog warm milk and see if she drinks it. Milk helps in restoring health and vitality. Furthermore there may be tablets or medicines that you can give to your dog. But I would suggest that you consult a vet before proceeding any further. Do not wait too long or your dog may get seriously sick.
