    Most of the time travel agents get paid on both ends. You and the package they are selling you ( from whom every ) the deal comes through. Travel agents just get better deals, simply because that is the type of work they are in.

    Example : Buying a car....you can use different resources in finding a car, auto trader, car dealer, or public auction, but when it caomes down to it dealers just get better deals.

    Most of the time if you just need to fly somewhere you can get a plane ticket for about the same price they can, if you book early enough. But going on vaction is different they have access on package deals you just have no knowledge of. The resorts and other places ( advertising resorts, vactions, and getaways ) go through traveling companys for promotion of themselves and its just cheaper for them to do so, because costly expensies of advertising.

    Getting paid: You as the consumer...from a little up charge for selling the package deal ( convience for u ), the place you are going, because they promoted the resort and sold a package deal.

    Believe it or not the average travel agency only profits about 10 - 19 % which really isn't a whole lot.

    Best part of using a travel agency is because of the problems you may encounter your not responsible for.

    Good luck and hope this helps

      Today's successful travel agent recognizes that consumers do their homework and are more knowledgeable about what they want:

      Distills product information by simplifying the research;
      Investigates and supplies competitive information;
      Knows about special promotions;
      Defines the specifics, such as airline penalties and restrictions;
      Makes recommendations on resorts;
      Enhances your trip with value-added benefits and amenities;
      Gets problems resolved.

      Travel agents are professionals who provide value by helping consumers cut through the clutter and save time and money. They act as travel counselors, offering personal service for their clients.

      A travel agent is also part salesperson and each sale they generate earns them between 10 and 15 percent commission.
      In essence, the commission earned is the amount received from a travel supplier and the amount they are paid for their services.

      Unless the travel agent or travel agency decides to add to the commission amount already due them, the price you pay is identical to what you will pay booking directly through a supplier.

      And in most cases, tour companies and cruise lines either encourage or require that you use a travel agent.

      Above all, agents work for their clients, not for a travel supplier.
