    On this day in history:

    American celebrated its first Earth day, a day when Senator Gaylord Nelson helped to organise across the country environmental campaigns, education, rallies and other events dedicated to conservation and environmental protection.

    On this day in 1945, German Fuhrer Adolf Hitler admitted defeat and realised that the Russians were driving into Berlin. He admits to the staff of his underground bunker that the war is lost and the best recall for all is suicide. Some of his staff do indeed kill themselves and their children.

    On this day in 1915, German troops in the first world war fired one hundred and fifty tons of chlorine gas at French troops, causing massive casualties.

    On this day in 1509, King Henry VIII of England became the king when his father Henry VII died.

    On this day in 2000, Armed police SWAT teams burst into the temporary home of cuban child Elian Gonzalez and took him away, screaming and crying. The SWAT team were armed and shouting orders, they met no resistance.
