Ancient Rome used a calendrical system quite different from our own; it was the Jews who had the notion of a special day for worship every seventh day, which was taken over by the Christians as well.  The usual Greek word is hebdomadae (literally "seven-days), which is used in Latin as well as "septimana."  Both are only found late and well past the classical period.
