E-commerce or electronic commerce basically means buying, selling, promotion, and servicing of products or services over computer networks. It also involves the electronic transfer of information between businesses.

Electronic commerce has come a long way from the late70s where it was used to send commercial documents and invoice electronically through a technology called Electronic Data Interchange (EDI). The term later involved into "web commerce" or "e-commerce" as it is termed at present, which included buying and selling of goods online, as well through secure servers.

E-commerce includes Internet-based relationships between customers and vendors and CD-ROM catalogs. E-commerce practitioners make use of the Internet to publicize company or product information, advertise and market aggressively, generate leads, take orders and build consumer databases. CD-ROM catalogs helps allow the allocation of huge amount of personalized product information through a cost effective medium.  Thanks to e-commerce, every business has a potential to be a global business, without limitations like physical location or time zonal differences.
