Ireland's Gaeltacht is the areas in Ireland where the Irish language is still widely spoken.
The population of the Gaeltacht, according to the 1991 census return was 83,268.
The area is mainly along the western seaboard Donegal, Mayo, Galway and Kerry but also includes some parts of County Cork and County Meath.
The Gaeltacht provides an environment where Irish language, culture, music and traditions can survive and prosper. The areas are ideal places for learners of the language and music to visit.
All areas hold Gaeltacht festivals.
County Mayo has festivals in July and August.
Traditional music can be learnt at Scoil Acla and Ceol na Locha in Tuar Mhic Edaigh in Mayo.
Galway also has festivals during the year.
County Kerry has many little visited places to visit and local pubs hold music and dancing sessions. A visit to a step dancing session in a local Keery pub is something that is not likely to be forgotten.
In an Ireland that's rapidly changing and old ways dying it's worth visiting the Gaeltacht areas to see what's left of the 'real' Ireland of folk memory.

The Gaeltacht is where some Irish students go to stay. The fee comes in at about 800 Euros for 3 weeks. You stay with a ban anti (meaning woman of the house in Irish). You attend classes for 3 hours of the day and then you can go swimming on the beach near by at night and there is either a ceile mor (big dance) or a disco which are great fun. I went there last year and had so much fun. It's in the west of Ireland where everyone speaks Irish and you make a tonne of new friends.
