American Samoa is a group of islands situated in the South Pacific Ocean and considered a part of the United States; the total land area of the islands is 200 sq km (77 sq miles) while the population is 57,291 a major part of which lives in Pago Pago, a village and port city known for its natural harbor, the capital is Fagatogo.

American Samoa is believed to have been first inhabited in 1000 BC by Polynesian people from the islands of Fiji, Tonga and Samoa though it is believed that human existence could have occurred even earlier especially on the Manu'a Islands of American Samoa.

The first contact of the islanders with Europeans took place in the 18th century and a battle between French explorers and the indigenous people has been recorded. Christianity officially was brought to Samoa by John London of the Congregationalist London Missionary in the 1830s.
