It is thought that brass paper clips were first used by the Byzantines for binding highly valued imperial documents. There does not seem to be any information about the actual inventor but it is thought that the first wire paper clips like those we still use today came from the Gem Manufacturing Company in Britain around 1890. There is no record of a patent being issued for the original Gem Clip.
