Winston Churchill held office as British Prime Minister between 10th May 1940 and 27th July 1945, before being re-elected on 26th October 1951. He was removed from office by the electorate for the final time on 7th April 1955.
Churchill is best known as the British leader during the Second World War. His political career began in 1900, however, when he was elected as Conservative MP to Oldham. From the beginning his political life was controversial: on election, rather than entering parliament he left for a speaking tour which covered the entire country. He did this in order to raise enough money to finance his career ~ at the time MPs were unpaid, and Churchill was not wealthy at the time. On returning to Parliament he aligned himself with the Hughlians, a swathe of Conservative MPs who opposed many of their government's policies.
Aside from his political life, Churchill was also an esteemed historian. Much of his writing was carried out for purely pragmatic reasons ~ although he was a gifted author and had a true passion for history, many of his best-known works were written simply to fund his lavish lifestyle.
