The Ouachita Mountains are basically a range of mountains that are situated in west central Arkansas and south-eastern Oklahoma. The range's cavernous roots may enlarge as far as central Texas, or further than it to the present spot of the Marathon Uplift.
The Ouachita Mountains were formed when the Pennsylvanian division of the Carboniferous era, about 300 million years back, the shoreline of the Gulf of Mexico ran all the way through the central portions of Arkansas. As the South American plate moved towards the north, a subduction zone was formed in this very area. The South American oceanic outer layer was enforced beneath the less-dense North American continental outer layer. Geologists call this fender-bender the Ouachita orogeny. The collision distorted the continental outer layer, which in turn produced the Fold Mountains, which we call as the Ouachitas.
