There's definitely something different happening with my dog's mouth when he's happy.  Is it that he's smiling, or is it just that his mouth is open and tongue hanging out which mimicks smiling?  I've often thought about this and prefer to think he's smiling...it's just so cool when his whole body says, "I'm happy!"

"Can a dog smile?" is a question that is answered upon what you believe...some people who (excuse me) hate dogs, would say...no dogs don't smile when they open their mouth...they drool...or something like that...a dog lover would say...awww i feel its like they are smiling when they open their mouth like that.........i mean really, no one has proof that a dog can or cannot smile...its what they believe, but I think they smile because dogs are really kind animals and kind people should smile...RIGHT? :) LOL

Dogs can smile or yet make it look like they are smiling while wagging that tail waiting for something. I also believe they smile because I see it in my dog.
