Do Any Of The Marsupials Eat Meat And Hunt For Their Food?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The marsupial carnivores are a large and flourishing group of animals that live in Australia, Tasmania and New Guinea. They include true carnivores that prey on other vertebrates, such as rodents and reptiles; and insectivores that feed on insects, spiders, worms and similar invertebrates.

Marsupial carnivores include tree dwellers, ground dwellers and species adapted for running or jumping. Many bear a strong resemblance to unrelated placental mammals, as they have evolved in similar ways to cope with the same ecological conditions.

At the time when the marsupial carnivores were just starting to diversify, there were not yet any placental mammals in Australia, and the marsupials filled the places in the food chain that were glaringly vacant. As a result, the evolutionary process has produced a range of marsupials that, in appearance and behaviour, resemble mammals such as shrews, rats, cats, dogs and even bears and that have taken on carnivorous eating habits.
