Where Is Charing Cross?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Charing Cross is what a railway station and the surrounding areas are called smack in the dead center of London. Measurements to all places in London are measured from here and those attempting to drive cabs in London after passing the knowledge have to learn every street within a radius of 6 miles of Charing Cross.

Charing was the name of a hamlet which was originally located here. Edward the First placed crosses wherever the coffin of his beloved wife rested on its way to Westminster Abbey. He placed one in the hamlet of Charing as well, thus the name Charing Cross. The crosses were known individually as Eleanor's Cross. Unfortunately the original cross of Caring Cross no longer exists.

There is also a Charing Cross Road which extends from Trafalgar Square to St. Giles Circus. It has been named so after Charing Cross.
