The Great fire at Spokane started on August 4th, 1889 at 6 in the evening, and etymologically speaking, it was not a fire but a conflagration. The fire converted the small city of Spokane into ashes.

The reason for the fire was yet to be determined and conflicting theories were propagated by various people. Some people thought that a saloon girl named Irish Kate was responsible for the fire. It was said that a drunkard came to her saloon and they had a fight and because of that fight, she found her hair needed a fix. She went into her room and stuck a curling iron in a kerosene lamp. It was believed that the man came back and they involved into another brawl which resulted into Kate falling on the lamp and as a result the lamp fell causing the fire.

Another theory stated that the fire was started when Bill Wolfe was cooking Pork Chops at his lunch counter at Railroad Avenue and a flame caught a towel that was hanging by the fire which resulted into great fire. Whatever caused the fire is still a mystery, but it caused great havoc in Spokane.
