When you present information orally you need to say to say it in a very different way than you do when you write. Here are three steps to go through as you compos your preparation. First is limit you main points, second is make your main ideas stand out, third is to use an effective opening and closing. For each of these three steps we will use short and simple examples.
After we have through all three we will look at a longer more complex case. Once again always remember that speaking is not the same as writing. You simply cannot present your audience with the same amount of detail as you can in writing. Speaker very often commit this error of over-whelming their audience with information. Imagine for example a speaker in an impeccable business suit going up to an overhead projector and slapping down an agenda slide with about twenty five points to cover.
The audience simply cannot process it al. how many points can they process. The cognitive psychologists disagree somewhat on these questions; some say seven and other say four. To play it safe however limit the number of main points you make in presentation to three, four or five.
