Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Chris Evert was an American tennis player who is now a professional commentator.
She was known for her two-handed backhand. She started tennis at an early age and beat stars such as Margaret Smith Court, Virginia Wade, and Billie Jean King when she was a teenager.  Evert was a poised and intensely concentrated player, the reason why she became a favorite of sportswriters and spectators and attracted large audiences and significant prize money to women's tennis.

Evert entered the professional circuit in 1972 after winning the Virginia Slims championship tournament and the United States Clay-Court Championship earlier the same year. Only two years later at age 19 she won singles titles at Wimbledon and the French and Italian opens.

In 1975, she won her first US Open women's singles title by defeating Evonne Goolagong. The same year she also won the French Open. In 1976, she won the Wimbledon singles and from there on she never looked back, wining a total of six US opens, seven French opens, three Wimbledon titles, and two Australian opens. She retired as a professional tennis player in 1989 and became a television commentator. She was the first player to win 1000 singles matches, a feat which earned her a place in the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1995.
