What Does Bitterness Mean?

    If something is bitter or sharp to taste or by nature, then it is said to possess bitterness. Thus, it is a quality of the things that are bitter. Bitter substances have unpleasant taste and are said to carry bitterness or sharpness or pungency. In the example: bitter berries; the berries are bitter but they possess bitterness (a quality). The bitterness in something causes unpleasant or painful sensation. Example: The bitterness of the cold mountain winds. It means that the winds were bitter or prickly.

    Think of something that is difficult for you to accept or endure. Can you tell the reason, why is it so? I t is because of the bitterness inherent in the circumstances. Thus, bitterness could mean disappointment, embitterment, resentfulness, acrimony, resentment or virulence or pain or acute distress of mind or severity of temper. Another word for bitterness is enmity, grudge or hatred.
