Who Were Charles VI Of Austria's Siblings?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Charles VI of Austria reigned as Holy Roman Emperor commencing 1711 to 1740. He had two children, named Maria Theresa and Maria Anna, both girls. This off course meant that there was no living male heir, which posed a serious problem for succession. With his foresight Charles VI prepared the Pragmatic Sanction of 1713, in which it was clearly stated that the realms of his kingdom could not be divided, and that daughters were also entitled to their inheritance of the throne. Following his death, the Austrian War of Succession broke out, but ultimately his Pragmatic Sanction triumphed, with his daughter being crowned Queen of Hungary and Bohemia, and Archduchess of Austria. However because of gender restrictions she was not elected as the Holy Roman Empress.  Maria Theresa's husband Francis I  took over after Charles VII's reign, ensuring survival of the Habsburg line.
