From 1864 onwards anyone marrying in the Roman Catholic church was required to have a certificate which was filled out by a priest. It had to be forwarded to a registrar within 3 days of the marriage having taken place.

The legal obligation was on the marriage partners to ensure that the registrar received a copy.

The following information was recorded on the certificate:-
The full names and surnames of those marrying; the date of the wedding; the ages of the couple to be married; condition i.e single, spinster, batchelor, widow, widower; rank, profession or occupation; residence at the time of the marriage, name and surname of the respective marriage partners fathers; rank, profession or occupation of the marriage parties fathers

The certificate also had to be signed by two marriage partners, two witnesses and the clergyman who performed the ceremony.
