At the moment, there is no cure for multiple sclerosis but there are several treatments that can help lessen some of the symptoms and keep the affected person mobile and in control of their own lives as long as possible.

Steroid drugs, such as methylprednisolone can be given to people with multiple sclerosis. This tends to shorten periods of relapse and also make the symptoms experienced during relapses much easier to cope with. Taking steroids for short periods is not too much of a problem but taking them over a long time can cause more problems than the solve. Common side effects include higher than normal blood pressure, diabetes and osteoporosis.

Other drugs can also be used including drugs from the interferon family of molecules. These can dampen down the body's immune response and can reduce the symptoms during flare ups of multiple sclerosis. It is important that people with multiple sclerosis have regular check ups so that their disease can be controlled as tightly as possible.
