How Did The Spider-man Character Start And Why Is He So Popular?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Peter Benjamin Parker, who was the super hero Spider-man's mortal side, was first seen in Marvel Comic books in 1962. His creators were writer Stan Lee and artist Steve Ditko.  The comic that launched Spiderman was Amazing Fantasy and depicted Peter Benjamin Parker as an average teenager. To assure you of the level of Spider-man's popularity, an original, near mint condition copy of that Amazing Fantasy issue (#15) was sold at auction in 2001 for $122,000!

The original intrigue in Peter Parker was that he was just an average nerd and folks could identify with him. Then a fluke accident in the science lab, combined with a spider bite, and suddenly our "average joe" develops into a superhero! Much credit should be given to Lee who wove a believable story line and Ditko for some wonderful illustrating which created the character we still see today,

Prior to Spider-man's introduction the two favorite super heroes were Batman and Superman, both "God like" characters. Even when Spider-man is spinning his webs across the city to fight crime, he still has to pay the rent!
