The word desisting (from doing something) means ceasing to proceed or act while doing something, stopping while the person is in the midst of doing it or forbearing (which is defined as being patient). The word desist is often used with the word from.

The word desist is pronounced as de-sist. More emphasis is put on the second syllable, which is also the last syllable of the word, namely the syllable sist. Desisting is a normative verb and the past participle of the verb to desist. It is also the verb to desist in the imperfect and the present perfect tense.

It comes from the Latin verb desistere, which is a combination of two words, namely the negative prefix de and the verb sistere, which means to stand or to stop. It is, in turn, derived from the verb stare, which means to stand. It is derived from the French verb d'esister.

Close: the de prefix means "off" or "from" rather than a negation. Thus the sense is not only stop or stand (sistere) but also to move away. Contrast with assist (a = to or for, hence stand for), and resist (stand against)
