I read that a certified birth certificate could be used but it specified for land and sea points of entry. What about flying?

As of Jan 1, 2007 Anyone travelling into Canada must obtain a passport. The key is to re-enter to the US. That's the vital point of needing a passport.

Yes, you do need a passport, and it is taken 8-12 weeks to receive your passport or longer as long as you apply and show receipt prior to traveling.They are allowing travel to Canada and Porto Rico .
