What Is Curanderismo?

Curanderismo, a significant part in the Latin American folk medicine, refers to the holistic treatment addressing the physical, psychological, social and spiritual needs of the individuals. It is a perfect combination of religious beliefs, faith and prayer with that of herbal therapy, massage therapy and other traditional method of healing. The teacher pr practitioner of this treatment is referred to as curandero and curandera respectively in case of male healer and female healer. In Curanderismo, it is believed that all the illnesses are actually originated as the by-product of physical, psychological, social and spiritual interactions. The proponents of this therapy believe that most of the ailments are the result of experiencing intense negative emotions caused by traumatic events. For example, susto is a disease assumed to develop as a result of getting frightened. It may include anything ranging from dog attack to car accident. The primary symptoms of susto include extreme nervousness, depression, insomnia, diarrhoea, numb eyes etc. The treatment suggested under this therapy is to extricate the individual's bad spirit from his bodily system. On the other hand, bilis is another illness that is caused due to extreme emotional stress. The illnesses like empacho and colic are treated by massage therapy and herbal remedies.
