Lodge refers to a place to spend the night. Thus it can be a small house that provides temporary shelter or a hostel that provides overnight accommodation for travellers. Lodge may also consist of cabins or rooms with private or shared bathrooms with restaurant service available nearby. Hence it is a type of hotel.

Most of the lodges are found in rustic settings and surroundings. It is run by a caretaker and is very similar to an inn which provides temporary quarters for resting and sleeping. Initially such places were established for occupational purposes like woodcutting, masonry but acquired its current nature gradually over several years. There are several types of lodges like ski lodges, hunting lodges, luxury resorts, etc that gives an indication that such places might also be seasonal in nature.
