Your dog can pick up on the tiniest changes in your biological, chemical and emotional state. It is possible if the dog is aware of the result of separation that the dog associates certain behaviours on your part with previous behaviour. This often results in highly undesirable behaviour from the dog, which can be totally out of character.
Dogs are social animals and learn socialization likes humans as they grow from puppies into adult dogs. Some dogs can sense through patterns of behaviour as stimuli that you are planning to leave, long before you actually leave. Anxiety can occur on return when the animal is concerned with you leaving again.
It is possible for you to train or help to get your dog trained in order to improve things. However, this will take time and patience on your part as it is not at all easy. See a vet or animal psychologist.
