I am trying to advertise my site because it is a great addition to the blog community but it seems like every time I get a steady stream of visitors they then disappear.

You must target those websites which are at their peak this time. For example, wordpress, youtube, squidoo and other websites like this. Because daily thousands of new users visit these websites. But for advertising on websites like youtube is not possible without money and they definitely will take lot of money as this is one of the top website now days. But websites like wordpress, squidoo do not take money for posting blogs and articles. As you want to get traffic so I will recommend some article related websites and blogs. Reason is that, you it is one of the best sources to get traffic and moreover it is free of cost. So why not you use this option, except for going towards other expensive options.
Advantage of websites like wordpress and squidoo is that here you can write details about your website, and as I said earlier daily thousands of users visit these websites so you have a great chance to convey your message to those people. Believe me there are number of websites like wordpress, which are not only popular but has huge traffic.
It's up to you whether you want to choose free option or paid option. If you are ready to spend money then I will suggest that put your website advertisement on GOOGLE. It is the right place to spend money on advertisements because it returns you even 3 to 4 times more than that you expense.
